The ubiquitous developer Alfred Grant Pty Ltd had a hand in developing Wurtulla – it was one of the four suburbs that comprised the Kawana Waters coastal residential project, which began in 1960 in conjunction with the Landsborough Shire Council and Queensland Government. The claim that the name was an indigenous word for ‘south’ is dubious. After Kawana Estates took on the Kawana project, subdivisions in Wurtulla began in about 1980. It was one of the last of the Kawana suburbs to be developed, and by then conservationist Kathleen McArthur’s messages about the importance of the area’s flora was known, so the Currimundi Lake Conservation Park on Wurtulla’s southern side was reserved in 1975.
The median property price in Wurtulla is $540,000 for a house and $372,500 for a unit. Median rents are $460 per week for a house and $363 per week for a unit.

Lucky new home buyers can pick up smaller properties for around the $300,000 mark. While most are detached homes, there are a few older townhouse homes and newer apartment buildings in the suburb.
Nicklin Way runs through Wurtulla, so the suburb is home to many shops and businesses. Wurtulla also has the Club Kawana Bowls Club, a retirement village, Wurtulla Village shopping centre and Currimundi Lake Conservation Park. The vast majority of the suburb, however, is reserved for homes.
